Icon Tutorials #007 + #008
Before to Result
Coloring Tutorial for Photoshop.
Use of Curves, Selective Color, Color Balance.

Icon Coloring Tutorial
This coloring should work best on rather clear indoor screencaps. Again, applying the exact settings to every picture might deliver unsatisfactory results. Have a look at the screencap you're using and see what colors are the most prominent and change the settings accordingly.

Note that english isn't my first language and that I use a german version of Photoshop, so if there're anything you don't understand: just ask.

Get Started
The original screencap is from [info]office_caps.

The Office caps already have nice and clear coloring, they just need to be spiced up a tad.

In Photoshop I resize the image to 120 pixels of height, copy it into a new 100 x 100px file and move it around until I like the "cropping".

Duplicate the base and set to "Screen 100%".

Step 2 Step 3
Add a "Curves" adjustment layer with the following settings:
RGB 114:124; 139:156
RED 136:139; 166:175
GREEN 175:174; 212:209
BLUE 146:145; 194:200
Add a "Selective Color" adjustment layer.

REDS
-39; +9; 0; 0
YELLOWS
+72; 0; -12; 0
GREENS
+100; +100; +100; 0
CYANS
+100; 0; 0; 0
NEUTRALS
+8; +1; +5; -4
Step 4 Step 5
Duplicate the "Selective Color" layer and set to "Soft Light 10%". Yes, I know, it's a very minimal difference.
Add a new "Curves" adjustment layer:
RGB 146:163
GREEN 136:135; 163:169
Step 6 Step 7
I like the green in the background so I want to make it stand out more. Add a new "Selective Color" adjustment layer:
REDS
-20; 0; +13; 0
GREENS
+100; -100; +100; 0
NEUTRALS
+18; -8; +1; 0
I know: yuck!
Let's balance the green out with a "Color Balance" adjustment layer: 0, -10, +20
Better, don't you think?
THE END!

Coloring Tutorial for Photoshop.

Icon Coloring Tutorial
I was asked how to get the coloring on this icon. I couldn't retrace all steps exactly but I think it comes pretty close.

From this To this
Get Started
The original screencap is from VM-Caps.com, my favourite VM screencap resource.

In Photoshop I resize the image to 140 pixels of height, copy it into a new 100 x 100px file and move it around until I like the position.

Duplicate the base twice and set the top layer to "Screen 70%" and the bottom duplicate to "Screen 100%".

Step 2 Step 3
Add this beautiful texture by [info]peoplemachines, set it to "Multiply 100%" and get rid of the part covering Veronica's face and body.
Doesn't look too fancy yet, so add a "Curves" adjustment layer with the following settings:
RGB 117:128; 131:156
RED 117:118; 163:159; 178:179
BLUE 155:149; 189:178
Set this layer to "Hard Light 40%"
Step 4 Step 5
Add a "Brightness/Contrast" adjustment layer and increase the contrast to +8.
Add a "Hue/Saturation" adjustment layer and increase the saturation to +40. The base was rather dull, so you might want to use a lower setting for other images.
Step 6 Step 7
Some parts are definitely too green so let's add a "Selective Color" adjustment layer:
REDS
-20; 0; 0; 0
NEUTRALS
+40; 0; -40; +2
Overall I want it to turn out more blue so I add a "Color Balance" adjustment layer with the following settings: 0, 0, +10.
That's it!

Yea, yours is brighter/crisp. Maybe with a soft light layer or brightness/contrast adujustments, it'd be pretty close. Thanks for taking time to write out the tut. :)

Hm, I somehow don't get the curves adjustment thing...
Step by step for dummies please...
When I create a new layer and want to adjust curves it says I can't do it because the layer is empty. So I have to dupl. the original pic again or what?
Then where and how do I fill in the values? I only see a curve there that I can move manually, but no RED etc. values to change. Help please? ;)
