Icon Tutorial #005
Tutorial for Photoshop for Photoshop only
Go from this

This is yet another attempt to make Supernatural Icons more colorful. Again, applying the exact settings to every picture might deliver unsatisfactory results. Have a look at the screencap you're using and see what colors are the most prominent and change the settings accordingly.
One more thing: I don't include steps like when to sharpen or when to soften. You know that by yourself ;)
Note that english isn't my first language and that I use a german version of Photoshop, so if there're anything you don't understand just ask.

| I mostly use screencaps from stripedwall.com because they provide them in high quality. So in Photoshop I resize the image to 150 pixels of height and copy it into a new 100 x 100px file. Then I go to Image -> Adjustments -> Variations. For this screencap I only adjusted the brightness. I know it's alluring but don't go too bright. I've worked with the Variation options so often that I don't know what the default settings are, so I can't tell you how often you should press the "Brighter" button. You might want to have a look at the screenshot provided above. |
|
| Step 2 | |
| Then I copy my new base and set the first copy to "Screen 100%" and the duplicated top layer on "Screen 40%" | Not very impressive, yet. Now, go to your layer palette and add a "Hue/Saturation" adjustment layer. I set the saturation to +63. |
| Step 3 | |
| Now add a "Curves" adjustment layer RGB 0:15; 124:147; 247:255 GREEN 128:135 |
Add another "Curves" adjustment layout RGB 125:136 RED 0:3; 84:24; 162:160 GREEN 0:10; 97:69; 200:221; 247:255 BLUE 130:122 |
| Step 4 | |
| Not too bad but I'm still not 100% happy with it, so I added a "Selective Color" adjustment layer. REDS -48; 0; +100; 0 YELLOWS +100; +27; -29; 0 GREENS -90; -50; 0; 0 CYANS +100; 0; +10; +20 WHITES (I don't use this one often but I wanted to add color to the building in the background) +100; 0; -80; 0 NEUTRALS +5; 0; 0; 0 |
Now add another "Selective Color" adjustment layer to make the bushes or trees stand out more. For this I just edited the GREENS -100; -100; +100; +100 |
| Step 5 | |

|
| And now, just because I didn't like the dull color of Sam's jacket, I created a new layer and brushed over his jacket with #663333 and set this layer to "Soft Light 100%" | And... that's it! |

| This is my complete layer palette, again for your reference. | And some more examples, made with the same technique but with slightly different settings. |
